3 Tips to Reduce Filament Waste in Multicolor 3D Printing

Reducing filament waste is crucial not just for saving on filament costs, but also for minimizing the environmental impact. While there are many videos out there showing how to melt down PLA or grind it up to make your own filament, most of us are looking for simpler measures. Although you can't eliminate filament waste completely, you can significantly reduce it. Let's explore the top three ways to reduce filament waste in multicolor 3D printing using Bamboo Labs Studio.

1. Flushing Into the Object's Infill

One of the best ways to minimize waste is by flushing the filament into the infill of your prints during material changes. Most experienced 3D printers know about this, but it's often overlooked. The AMS system in Bamboo Labs typically purges small amounts of filament to ensure the new material flows correctly. Instead of discarding this purge material, you can redirect it into the infill of your prints. Here's how:

  • Click on Other in the settings.
  • Ensure your Prime Tower is enabled.
  • Click on Flush into Objects Infill.

2. Printing Multiples of the Same Item

Another effective method is to print multiples of the same item in a single print. This significantly reduces the amount of filament wasted during the start and end of each print, as the printer operates continuously. This method is especially beneficial if you sell 3D prints. To do this:

  • Select your item.
  • Press Ctrl + K to create as many copies as you need.

3. Flushing Into a Sacrificial Object

Bamboo Labs Studio has a feature that lets you purge filament directly into a sacrificial object, which is great for printing with multiple materials or colors. This method is particularly useful when switching from dark to light colors, which might require more than one purge. Although you don't have control over where the colors are placed, the software determines the color pattern based on your current print. Here’s how to use this feature:

  • Right-click on the object once it's on the build plate.
  • Scroll down to Flush Options.
  • Click Flush into the Object.

By using these three methods—flushing into the infill, printing multiple copies of an item, and flushing into a sacrificial object—you'll significantly reduce filament waste. These techniques not only save costs but also contribute to more sustainable and environmentally friendly 3D printing practices.
