Sometimes you look at a 3D printed prop and it looks more like a toy than something you’d actually see in the real world.
The shape might be perfect. The design might be incredible. But something feels off.
That “something” is almost always the material.
One of the biggest challenges in prop making isn’t modeling—it’s selling the illusion. You can have an amazing 3D model, but if the surface doesn’t look believable, the whole thing falls apart.
So instead of fixing that problem after printing with paint… what if you solved it before the print even started?
That’s exactly what we’re doing here.

Building Realism Into the Print
For this project, I printed a spear design from Loot Studios—but with a twist.
Instead of printing everything in one filament and painting it later, I used multiple filaments to create realism straight off the printer.
The goal was simple:
Make the prop look as close to “real” as possible with little to no painting.
And honestly, this approach changes everything.
The Materials That Make It Work
Each part of the spear was printed with a specific filament chosen for how it looks—not just how it prints.
Wood PLA (Tiger Wood Style)
For the shaft, I used a wood-based PLA with a Tiger wood color.
This filament has multiple shades of brown built right into it, which gives it a natural variation you just can’t get from a flat color. Right away, it looks more like real wood and less like plastic.
And that matters.
If your prop looks too smooth or too uniform, your brain immediately flags it as fake. The layered tones in wood PLA help break that illusion in a really natural way.
Carbon Fiber PLA + Rub and Buff
For the blade base and pommel, I used a matte carbon fiber PLA.
On its own, it already has a darker, more rugged look—but this is where one simple trick makes a huge difference.
I lightly brushed Rub and Buff over the high points of the print.
That’s it.
Because it only catches the raised areas, it creates a worn, metallic effect without needing full paint coverage. The result looks surprisingly close to real metal, especially when paired with the matte texture of carbon fiber PLA.
Dual-Color Silk PLA (Red/Black)
For the accent pieces, I used a red and black dual-color silk PLA.
This is where the fantasy element comes in.
The way silk filament reflects light gives it a subtle shimmer that feels almost magical. It adds visual interest without needing any extra finishing work.
It’s one of those materials that just looks good straight off the printer.
Why This Approach Works
Instead of treating the entire prop as one uniform object, each section is given its own “material identity.”

The Big Shift: Stop Thinking “One Filament”
A lot of people approach prop printing like this:
“Print everything, then fix it later with paint.”
But a better approach is:
“Choose the right material for each part from the start.”
Using multiple filaments lets you skip a ton of post-processing while actually improving the final result.
It’s not just easier—it often looks better.
What Happened During Assembly…
Quick reality check: the camera didn’t record the assembly.
No idea what happened. Either I missed record or something glitched.
But honestly, that kind of proves the point even more.
Because even without showing the full build process, the final result still works—and that’s because the realism was already built into the prints themselves.
There are a lot of filaments out there now that do more than just “print.”
They simulate real materials.
They add texture, depth, and character.
And when you use them the right way, you can get incredibly realistic props without spending hours painting.
So next time you’re starting a prop build, don’t just think about the model.
Think about the materials.
