One of the most common mistakes people make when trying to strengthen a 3D print is increasing the infill for the entire model. While this does make the part stronger, it also increases print time, uses more filament, and often adds unnecessary weight.
A better solution is to strengthen only the areas that need it.
Bambu Studio includes a powerful feature called Modifiers that lets you apply different print settings to specific regions of a model. Instead of making the entire part solid, you can increase the infill, walls, or other settings only where additional strength is required.
Why Use Modifiers?
Not every section of a model experiences the same amount of stress. Parts like mounting points, hinges, brackets, or drone arms typically need much more strength than the rest of the print.
Using modifiers allows you to:
- Increase strength only where it’s needed.
- Reduce overall print time.
- Save filament.
- Keep lightweight designs from becoming unnecessarily heavy.
This is especially useful for functional parts where balancing weight and durability is important.
Example: Strengthening a Drone Arm
For this example, I imported a drone frame into Bambu Studio. The model was using 15% Grid infill, which is perfectly adequate for most of the body, but the arms are subjected to much higher loads during flight and landings.
Rather than increasing the infill for the entire drone, I added modifiers only to the four arms.
Adding a Modifier
To create a modifier:
- Right-click the model.
- Select Add Modifier.
- Choose the shape that best matches the area you want to reinforce.
In this case, a cylinder was the best choice because it closely matched the shape of the drone arm. While a cube would also work, choosing a shape that more closely fits the geometry usually makes positioning easier.
Position the Modifier
Resize and move the cylinder until it completely covers the drone arm.
The modifier only affects the portion of the model that overlaps the shape, so it’s important to ensure the entire section you want reinforced is covered.
Change the Print Settings
With the modifier selected, adjust only the settings for that region.
For this example:
- Infill: 100%
- Infill Pattern: Rectilinear
- Walls: 3
Everything outside the modifier remains at the original settings of 15% Grid infill.
Duplicate for Similar Features
Once the first arm is configured, there’s no need to repeat the process from scratch.
Simply duplicate the modifier and position copies over the remaining three arms. After slicing, each arm prints with solid infill while the rest of the drone stays lightweight.
The Result
Using modifiers produces a part that is significantly stronger where it matters most without increasing the weight or print time of the entire model.
Instead of making the whole model solid, you’re placing material exactly where it’s needed.
More Than Just Infill
Modifiers aren’t limited to changing infill density. They can also be used to:
- Increase or decrease wall count.
- Change layer height in specific areas.
- Adjust print speed.
- Modify infill patterns.
- Apply different print settings to localized regions of a model.
Once you become familiar with modifiers, you’ll likely find yourself using them on many functional prints.

Modifiers are one of the most useful—and often overlooked—features in Bambu Studio. They allow you to build stronger, more efficient parts without wasting filament or adding unnecessary weight.
The next time you need extra strength in just one area of a print, don’t increase the infill for the entire model. Add a modifier instead.
Your print will be lighter, faster, and engineered exactly where it counts.
