Stop Bambu Lab Studio from Snapping Your Model Back to the Build Plate

If you’ve ever tried moving a model above the build plate in Bambu Lab Studio only to have it instantly snap back down, you’re not doing anything wrong. It’s one of those behaviors that’s designed to prevent failed prints—but sometimes you actually want your model floating above the build plate.

Whether you’re creating custom supports, assembling multiple parts into a single print, or experimenting with conductive filament like I was, there’s a simple trick that gives you complete control over your model’s position.

Why Bambu Lab Studio Keeps Snapping Your Model Down

By default, Bambu Lab Studio wants every model to sit directly on the build plate. This helps prevent accidental floating models that would fail to print.

Most of the time, that’s exactly what you want.

However, there are plenty of situations where raising a model is intentional, including:

  • Printing a part on top of another object
  • Creating custom support structures
  • Building multi-part assemblies
  • Designing embedded components or electronics
  • Experimenting with advanced print techniques

The Simple Fix: Create an Assembly

The trick is to give your model something else to be attached to.

Step 1: Add Another Object

Add a simple primitive object, such as a cube, to the build plate.

Step 2: Select Both Objects

Select your original model and the cube.

Step 3: Merge Them

Right-click and choose Merge.

Bambu Lab Studio will create an Assembly, treating both objects as a single unit.

Step 4: Move Your Model

Now select your original model within the assembly.

You’ll notice something different:

It no longer snaps back down to the build plate.

You can freely position it exactly where you want—even above the build plate or directly on top of the second object.

When This Trick Comes in Handy

This is useful for far more than just demonstrations.

Some examples include:

  • Creating custom supports
  • Printing one object directly on another
  • Designing parts that will be assembled during printing
  • Embedding conductive filament paths
  • Testing advanced multi-part designs

In my case, I was experimenting with conductive filament and needed to position parts exactly where I wanted them.

Sometimes the most frustrating “features” in slicer software are actually safety mechanisms designed to protect us from failed prints.

Once you understand how assemblies work in Bambu Lab Studio, you can take full control over your model placement without fighting the software.

It’s a simple trick, but it’s one that can save a lot of frustration the next time your model refuses to stay where you put it.
