Today we're diving into a sticky showdown, testing different types of super glue specifically for 3D printing. We'll conduct our signature snap and twist tests on some of the most popular super glues to see which one truly performs best for makers and DIYers.
Over the past year, I've received numerous requests to test various super glues, including popular brands like Loctite, Starbond, Gorilla Glue, and even those with spray accelerants. In today's showdown, we'll test Loctite, Gorilla Glue, Starbond, DAP (commonly available at local stores like Lowe's), and the original Super Glue.
Testing Methodology: Snap and Twist
If you're new to our glue tests, here's how it works:
-
Snap Test: Two 3D-printed PLA pieces are bonded together, then snapped apart to see if the bond breaks or if the PLA itself fails.
-
Twist Test: Two bonded PLA pieces are twisted apart, evaluating the strength of the adhesive under torsional stress.
These tests simulate real-world scenarios, such as building cosplay props or functional tools, which often experience similar stresses during use.
Safety First!
Before beginning, always remember to prioritize safety. Wear safety goggles when performing tests that involve breaking or twisting glued parts.
Test Results:
DAP Super Glue
-
Snap Test: Failed (bond broke, PLA did not)
-
Twist Test: Passed
Original Super Glue
-
Snap Test: Failed (bond broke easily; possibly affected by humidity)
-
Twist Test: Failed
Gorilla Glue
-
Snap Test: Passed (PLA broke first)
-
Twist Test: Passed
Starbond
-
Snap Test: Passed (PLA broke first)
-
Twist Test: Passed
Loctite
-
Snap Test: Passed (PLA broke first)
-
Twist Test: Passed
Because humidity can impact adhesive performance, we retested the DAP and original Super Glue after reapplication:
-
DAP Retest: Still failed snap test but passed twist test again.
-
Original Super Glue Retest: Failed both tests again.
The Winners:
After rigorous testing, three clear winners emerged:
-
Loctite
-
Gorilla Glue
-
Starbond
All three adhesives provided strong bonds that broke at the PLA level rather than at the glue joint, demonstrating exceptional strength in both snap and twist tests.
What's Next?
We're planning further testing using a force meter for even more precise measurements, and we'll also test specialty glues like Kraken and Instant Bond, which include accelerants.
