How to Make Custom D&D Coasters with a Laser Engraver (Beginner-Friendly DIY)

If you’ve ever sat down for Dungeons & Dragons night and realized your drink has zero personality… yeah, that’s a problem.

You’ve got dragons, magic, chaos—and then a boring coaster?

Let’s fix that.

Today, we’re making custom D&D drink coasters using a laser engraver, and this is one of those projects that hits everything we love as makers: easy to do, super customizable, and actually useful at the table.

Why Make Custom D&D Coasters?

D&D is all about immersion. Every detail matters—from your miniatures to your terrain to your dice. So why not upgrade your table setup too?

Custom coasters:

  • Add personality to your game night

  • Help players feel connected to their characters

  • Make awesome gifts for your party

  • Can even be sold or customized for commissions

And honestly… they just look cool.

What You Need

This build is beginner-friendly and doesn’t require a full workshop setup.

Materials:

  • Wood coaster blanks (or cut your own)

  • Sanded and dried wood (very important—more on that below)

Tools:

  • Laser engraver (we used a WizMaker Mini 2.5W)

  • Design software (LightBurn or LaserGRBL)

Choosing the Right Wood (Important Tip)

You can grab coaster blanks from a hobby store, or go full maker mode and cut your own from raw wood.

But here’s the key:

👉 Your wood needs to be dry.

If it’s not fully dried, it will crack after engraving. Ask me how I know.

If you’re making your own:

  • Cut your rounds

  • Let them dry for a few weeks (or longer depending on thickness)

  • Sand them smooth before engraving

Designing Your D&D Coasters

This is where things get fun.

Each coaster in this build represents a different D&D class. The goal is to make them instantly recognizable while still looking clean and stylish.

The Set Includes:

  • Wizard – Arcane symbols and a spell circle

  • Rogue – Dagger and stealth-style iconography

  • Barbarian – Heavy lines, aggressive axe design

  • Cleric – Clean, balanced holy symbol

  • Druid – Organic, nature-inspired design

  • Ranger – Bow and arrow

💡 Maker tip: Keep your line weight slightly thicker for low-power lasers. Thin lines can disappear or burn unevenly—especially on a 2.5W setup.

Laser Engraving Setup (Beginner-Friendly)

For this project, we used the WizMaker Mini 2.5W laser engraver, and honestly—it’s about as simple as it gets.

Why this engraver works well:

  • No assembly required (plug and play)

  • Works with LightBurn and LaserGRBL

  • Compact footprint (150mm x 135mm work area)

  • Great for engraving wood, leather, cork, and more

Key Specs:

  • Power: 2.5W

  • Best for: Engraving (not heavy cutting)

  • Price: Around $99

This is a perfect entry-level machine if you’re just getting into laser projects.

Engraving the Coasters

Once your design is loaded:

  1. Position your coaster blank

  2. Frame your design (this helps with centering)

  3. Adjust your focus

  4. Hit start

That’s it.

This is one of those moments where you just sit there and go:

👉 “Yep… this is awesome.”

Real Results (And What to Watch For)

We engraved all six coasters, and overall:

✅ Clean lines

✅ No major burn issues

✅ Great detail for a 2.5W laser

One thing to watch:

Centering can be tricky.

Since natural wood blanks vary slightly in size, some designs (like the ranger) may sit a little off.

👉 Quick fix: Spend a few extra seconds framing each piece individually.

Final Results: Worth It?

Absolutely.

Each coaster ended up with its own personality:

  • The wizard looks like it came straight out of a spellbook

  • The barbarian looks like it could survive combat

  • The cleric feels clean and balanced

And together?

It just feels like a complete D&D setup.

Customization Ideas

This is where you can take things even further:

  • Add player names

  • Create campaign-specific designs

  • Sell custom sets on Etsy

  • Make themed sets (sci-fi, fantasy, etc.)

This project scales really well if you want to turn it into a side hustle.
